We Have A Winner

So here’s the thing. As you might imagine, whenever I meet people it’s almost inevitable that at some point the discussion is going to turn to beer. And as we get talking, it usually becomes apparent that I’m rather enthusiastic about the topic and that I’ve tasted my fair share of different beers over the years. Almost 3500 different ones as I type. And so, inevitably, the same question is always posited:

“Which one is your favorite?”

It’s a question I’ve always been reluctant to answer, because frankly there are just too darned many wonderful beers out there to really consider any one of them as “the best”. I usually rattle off a few that I like a lot, and at least admit that malty German doppelbocks are my favorite style.

Saturday night while browsing the aisles in Sherlock’s, I chanced to see that they had just gotten in a fresh supply of Augustiner Maximator from Munich, which is my favorite example of my favorite style. It usually goes fast, even at the current $10.99 a six-pack, so of course I snapped some up.

Later that night, I popped a bottle open, and was immediately lost in its soft and creamy malt body, sweet luxurious mouthfeel, and heavenly nutty chocolaty flavors. The first one was so good I followed it up with another, and then another…..

That got me thinking. I’ve always said that Maximator was quite possibly the best doppelbock on the planet. But now, I think, it may just be the best beer on the planet.
