I Drank My Beer From the Bottle…….

Last night, I broke the rules. I know that somewhere in the official Beer Geek Handbook there’s a rule that says you should never drink your beer out of the bottle. But my friends, I did just that. I eschewed my normal beer glass to drink a bottle of Leinenkugel’s Big Butt Doppelbock straight from the container. Worse still, I had pulled it from the very top of my Dedicated Beer Refrigerator (DBR for short), where the small freezer compartment had chilled it to an icy cold temperature.

And it was delicious. You see, we were painting, and I didn’t want to get paint on my beer glasses. But my point in all of this is that yeah, sometimes its OK to just kick back and enjoy a cold one. In this case, the Big Butt, a beer that didn’t impress me as a doublebock, was delicious in this application, recalling fond memories from days gone by of stubby little bottles of Philadelphia’s Schmidt’s Bock Beer packed tightly in snow.

So don’t be ashamed now and then to not take being a beer geek too far. To paraphrase Michael Jackson, beer is a playground and not a prison. So once in a while, go ahead and swig your beer from the bottle, ice cold to boot. I promise not to let them kick you out of the beer geek society if you do.

Beer and Football

Beer and football seem to be an obvious pairing. But what kind of beer you drink with the game is another matter entirely. As I type it’s the eve of “The Game”-New England at Indianapolis, the clash of the titans, battle of the unbeatens.

I have a habit of drinking New England craft beer while watching the Pats play. Usually, a lot of Sam Adams, and true to form, I’ll be cracking open a tasty Hallertau Imperial Pilsner. Last night, I picked up some other goodies, too: Harpoon Brown Session Ale, a nice enough sipping brew well suited to a long contest, and Sea Dog Riverdriver Hazelnut Porter, a lucious nutty dark brew that is rich with the flavors of toasted hazelnuts and coffee.

As good as it is, it’ll taste even better as a post-game toast should we win.
